We began the journey with a camping trip designed for team building, for which God answered the youth pastor’s prayer request for rain. What started as a frantic and exciting scramble to put up tents turned into frustrated attempts to find a dry part of the sleeping bag that night. But the rain fulfilled its purpose, in that it forced the team to unite and allowed for some down-time that was used to explain some of the history of residential schools. The latter was facilitated by the abandoned buildings near where we were camping, which have now been closed for a couple of decades.
Sunday noon we embarked the bus en route to Altona, where we were welcomed by South Park MB church and Seeds Church. South Park was where we spent the nights in simple but dry Sunday school rooms and Seeds Church provided a location for our meals and the training that was organized for us by MBMSI team leaders. This training usually took place in the morning, which concluded with team prayer time.
With a bus packed with students, leaders, instruments and a lot of energy, we arrived at the Makoon center at Roseau River Reserve where we proceeded to set up for the Kidzcamp. Under the direction of Sheralyn Heinrichs and Tania Enns, the Kidzcamp embraced around thirty kids that were given an opportunity sing, play and craft. Best of all, they were given an opportunity to witness the exclusive attention and love of our students who showed a very practical side of God’s love.
During the time that Kidzcamp was running, the older guys went over to the local school to offer a sports camp, which featured everything from structured baseball to good old fashioned wrestling. Although there were fewer kids in attendance there, the guys came back with stories that highlighted the great connections they were able to make with them.
Evenings usually included some further training as well as some fun aspect that gave everyone a chance to unwind. The best part though, was when we would gather in a circle as a team late in the evening, and one by one everybody would get a chance to share their God moment: a moment during the day in which they saw God at work in them and through them. Compiled, these moments provided an excellent snapshot of the experience. Come out on Sunday, October 12th, when the team will create the worship service as Eastview and give you a chance to hear about these moments.
