One Explosive Week in August

Andrea Toews - 2008-09-23

Life Change In ProgressThe walls of Eastview were vibrating with the energy of PowerLab during the week of August 17-21. 100 volunteers (pictured below right) + 200 children, mixed together with cool science-themed surprises and engaging, interactive Bible stories focusing on the miraculous power of Jesus Christ, all added up to a fun-filled, amazing event.

Every minute of the VBS program was planned out to engage the children in activities which were designed to give them a new enthusiasm for God’s word, and for Jesus’ awesome power. Through interactive Bible stories, wacky crafts, tasty treats, and hyper-speed games we all learned that Jesus gives us the power to be thankful, to help others, to be brave, to live forever, and to tell others about God.

Each evening began and ended with a lively large group gathering where we were led in praise and worship by the band, fittingly named “The Bunsen Burners.” This group, a mixture of young musicians from Eastview’s Junior and Senior High and Young Adults groups, inspired all of us to enthusiastic, actions-oriented singing. The whole-hearted participation by the children was contagious, and everyone in the room couldn’t help but join in.

Daily challenges gave the kids a chance to put what they learned into action, as they went home each evening with a plan to show God’s love to their family and friends. Through these challenges and our special VBS mission project of sending soccer balls to children in South Africa, the children were encouraged not just to learn God’s Word but to live it.

PowerLab VolunteersWe thank Eastview for this opportunity to serve, and for your prayers and support. We thank all of the volunteers (left) who joined in with such a willing eagerness. A project of this size is only effective when we all work together, joining God in his activity.

So why do we do VBS? We pray that all the energy and resources and time spent on this special project will add up to making a lifelong difference in the lives of these children. And we pray that the Bible learning and life application will have opened hearts to Jesus, young and old alike.
