Sneak Preview at SundayXL

Rick Hiebert - 2008-10-01

SundayXL is a new spiritual formation initiative that kicks off at Eastview on Sunday, October 19, 2008. To get some background on what SundayXL is, this article explains it well.

Looking for an opportunity to gain new insight, grow in your faith journey, apply spiritual truth, excel in your ministry area, or just learn more about what Eastview is all about? Read on.

At each SundayXL beginining with October 19, lunch will be provided following the second service. Classes will then run from 1pm to 4pm with a break in-between. And parents, don't worry: childcare will be available.

The classes will fall into five themes: Bible Discovery, Life Lessons, Spiritual Formation, Ministry Training, and Intro to Eastview. Please consider joining us for one of the opportunities listed below and register for this month‟s Sunday XL by completing the form provided by the ushers or at the Info Desk.

Option 1:
Message of Divine Discovery
Theme: Bible Discovery
Teacher: Dr. Gus Konkel, President, Providence College & Theological Seminary
Intended Audience: Those interested in knowing what Bible translation (version) to use
What to expect: Every one gets to know the Bible through a specific Bible translation. Which is the right one for me? Gain a new understanding and appreciation for God‟s word and learn how a translator provides the Divine Inspiration for the readers of the Bible. Come and hear from one of the Bible translators of the "New Living Translation (NLT)."
Suggested Reading: The article "The Shattered Crown" (click to read) is the story of the most prized, oldest complete Hebrew old testament. It was shattered in the riots of 1948 when the Jewish state was created. The story of the Aleppo Codex is the story of what happened to the Hebrew Old Testament three times before, beginning with the Babylonian exile in 586. How do translators create a text to translate? That is the first step always, if one wishes to translate from the original languages.
On Sunday Oct. 19 there will be present a complete facsimile of Codex Leningrad 19. This is the oldest remaining complete codex of the Hebrew Old Testament that serves as the basis for most translations. This codex is housed in the National Library in St. Petersburg, Russia. It came to St. Petersburg from Crimea, the home of Alexander Firkovitch, a Karaite Jew who spent a lifetime collecting Bibles.
The first lesson of "The Message of Divine Inspiration" will explore how translators recover an original text, and how they attempt to bring it to life for the contemporary reader. Examples of translation issues will be taken from The New Living Translation.

Option 2:
Pay It Forward: Introduction to Restitution (Part 1)
Theme: Life Lessons
Teacher: Lyle Morris, Eastview Community Church
Intended Audience: Parents, Teachers, (Small Group) Leaders
What to expect: Restitution focuses on relationships not rules, on responsibility and respect, not gold stars. Research has repeatedly shown that when kids and parents, or students and teachers treat one another with respect, the environment for learning and relationship-building improves. Restitution is based on a theory of internal motivation. Traditional discipline programs focus on consequences either positive ones such as rewards or negative ones such as the removal of privileges or detention. Restitution teaches self-discipline and skills needed to accept personal responsibility for one's actions. Restitution strengthens. The focus of restitution is restituting the self, which teaches children to behave, to help them discover who God has created them to be. In this interactive, two-part workshop, you will have opportunity to learn, from Biblical examples, how to apply the principles of restitution for yourself. (Part 2 of this course will be held on the next SundayXL, on November 16,)

Option 3:
Practices for Getting Closer to God
Theme: Spiritual Formation
Teachers: Rick Hiebert and Erni Wiebe, Eastview Community Church
Intended Audience: Christians who are dissatisfied with their current walk with God
What to expect: Do you find that reading your Bible seems boring or irrelevant and usually puts you to sleep? Do you find that when you pray you are saying the same things over and over again, unsure of what to really pray for? Are you tired of trying to improve your spiritual walk with little or no success? Then this course is for you. In it, we will explore the spiritual disciplines of hearing from God through His Word, talking to God through prayer, and the importance of fellowship with other believers. You will get a handle on how to really hear God through your Bible and how to experience meaningful communication with God through prayer. You will also find out the benefits of building life changing relationships with other followers of Christ.

Option 4:
Media Technology Ministry Training
Theme: Ministry Training
Teachers: Larry Kohut and Greg Armstrong, Eastview Community Church
Intended Audience: Current Media Technology volunteers and those interested in investigating Media Technology as a ministry
What to expect: Media Technology is not merely an audio visual technology; it is a vital ministry that reaches our congregation both inside and outside of Eastview‟s walls creatively communicating a clear message to the gathered congregation, the aging, the shut-in, and to those who wish home reflection and study. Participants in Media Technology play a vital role in the delivery of a vital message. Larry will give a clear overview of the AV ministry and a tour of the technology - including positions on the team and Greg will share a reflection of how media technology is a vital ministry in our church today.

Option 5:
Intro to Eastview
Teacher: Pastor Delbert Enns, Senior Pastor, Eastview Community Church
Intended Audience: New believers interested in membership and baptism
What to expect: This class is the basic introduction to “Becoming Disciples” and to our Church Family. Since we have members from many different church backgrounds, or limited church backgrounds, this class is designed to clearly explain who and what our church is. You will learn about: What it Means to be a Christian, The Symbols of Salvation: Baptism & Communion, Our Faith Statement, How Our Church is Structured, What it Means to be a Member, etc.

Remember, you can pick only one of these options, And whether you want to attend all or none: we'll will be back with more new alternatives for the next SundayXL on Sunday, November 16, 2008.
