Library News & Reviews

Mary Wachniak - 2008-09-23

John Thiessen was asked to review two books on behalf of the library, namely, Questions and Answers, by David Ewert, and Truth: What it is and Why We Should Accept It, by Karl Marek. The following are his comments:

Questions and Answers – This book is a collection of 50 questions people have asked (or could be asking) about things not clearly understood in the Bible. The answers are not from any particular MB perspective, but rather from Dr. Ewert’s rich background as a teacher, scholar, and author. I found them very meaningful, and would highly recommend them as a valuable resource that every church library should carry and promote for readers of every age.

The book is divided into two sections: Section I deals with questions arising from New Testament Texts, and Section II deals with questions about the Scriptures. The answers Dr. Ewert provides are not dogmatic or necessarily definitive, but are clearly and meaningfully answered. It is the second such book published. The first one was called Searching the Scriptures and was published by the Centre for Mennonite Brethren Studies in 2001.

Truth: What it is and Why We Should Accept It – This thin pamphlet could be described as a “tract” which invites readers to consider the Truth God presents us in His Word, especially in the New Testament, to accept Christ as Master of Lord of their lives.

As indicated on the fly-leaf of the book, Dr. Marek is eminently qualified to write the book because of his extensive studies and successful teaching career. The booklet is meant to be handed out by evangelical churches to those they are evangelizing or have confronted with the Truth of the Gospel, and have invited to dedicate their lives to continue to search for the Truth offered by Jesus.

Other news in the library: check out the new music, which includes such artists as Article One, Joel Ruge, Superchick, and Kutless, to name a few. As well, there are new junior, teen, and adult fiction books. Lastly, there are a number of books that were purchased recently to complete existing fiction series in the library. These titles include such authors as Lauraine Snelling, Wanda Brunstetter, Kim Vogel Sawyer, Beverly Lewis, Robin Parrish, and Susan Wales.
