Becoming a Member

Commitment

At Eastview we desire to be a biblical community which means that we can't just be organized; we must become an interdependent organism. The Bible refers to this as functioning as a Body in which each member supports and depends upon the other.

Why become a member you might ask?

Firstly, the concept is a biblical one implicit throughout the New Testament wherein believers clearly identified themselves with and devoted themselves to a local body. Secondly, there is an obvious practical value to identifying those who call this church home and can be counted on to build and sustain the ministries of the church. Perhaps most importantly though, membership benefits the individual. In a culture where commitment is no longer highly valued, membership moves us out of the 'fog' of our good intentions and spectatorship into the clarity of committed participation.

We believe that 'participating members' bear the following five essential marks of someone devoted to Christ and His Church. We call them the 5 G's.

  • Grace: The individual appropriation of the saving work of Christ followed by baptism as a believer. (Ephesians 2:8-9)
  • Growth: The ongoing evidence of a changing life and pursuit of Christ-likeness. (2 Peter 3:18)
  • Group: Participation in the body of Christ and connection with others in significant relationships. (Acts 2:46)
  • Gifts: Serving Christ's body according to spiritual giftedness and passion. (Romans 12:6-8)
  • Giving: Honouring God with one's time and material resources in support of the church. (Philippians 4:11-19)

Becoming a member is the culmination of a series of important events. It's not meant to be an end in itself but rather a step of discipleship, a milestone on the life long path of following Jesus with dedication and resolve. These events are comprised of attendance at two classes, the first being "Intro to Eastview" and the second "Discovering Church Membership". These are offered in advance of each membership / baptism celebration.
